MAGIC FISH & MODERN WITCHES: LIVIA RITA & GANG

Avante Garde Music, Art & Dance

‘In Livia Rita’s voice one doesn’t only hear Bjork, but the slightly manic, genius reverberations of Kate Bush.’ Tagblatt, Switzerland Tour, 2017

With previous performances at the V & A and Barbican, we’re pleased to welcome young visionary artist, Livia Rita! She will be giving a very special contemporary performance, aiming to communicate, express, move and question fashion through music, singing, a big installation, more outfits and of course, dancing.

Livia Rita’s eclectic musical style draws on a wide range of influences and genres, blending electronic pop effortlessly with experimental, classical and new wave styles. She subverts the listeners with each song, as wild, brutal textures meet vulnerable, otherworldly melodies in adventurous and emotional ways.

Livia Rita explores avant-garde ways of performing her synthesiser drenched music through a strong visual identity formed of art fashion and stylised movement designed by herself. Together with a gang of dancers and a band led by Tom McLuckie, it collides into a furious, unashamedly dreamy and tantalising live show; a surreal live 4D music video.

The debut album will be launched as a total artwork, including a music video for each song, and a magazine, which merges the lyrics of each tune with photography of their correlating art fashion collection. The work is developed at the Barbican with mentoring of Lindsay Kemp (David Bowie) and Lea Anderson.

After building up her core following in London’s radical subculture music and art scene, Livia Rita has toured Germany and Switzerland twice, where they have been picked up by Tonio Amin Zaoui from dq agency in Berlin. He is currently booking a larger Germany tour and festivals for summer 2019. Together with Coldkings, he will provide partners for the promotion of the upcoming European tour in autumn and the forthcoming releases

Supported by the Swiss Cultural Fund UK

(ANTI-)FASHION MANIFESTO (needs to be said....)

The fashion industry fails to address current challenges in our modern world. A blood red river runs in China whilst a factory crumbles to the ground in Bangladesh – over a thousand dead. Pollution, dangerous working conditions, modern slavery, child labour: this is not what fashion should be. I am striving for a new vision of fashion, a future-forward world of creation, not destruction. I see two different types of this new fashion...

WEARABLE SCULPTURE.
Fashion as pure art. I see it as an artform just like paintings, sculptures or any other piece of art. It will serve to do what other pieces of art do: express, move, communicate, dare, provoke, be beautiful, be frightening… and inspire. It will form an integral part of my music and carry meanings above just being ‘a piece of cloth’

SECOND SKIN.
Because nakedness is not always the solution; there should be outfits for everyday life that make us feel the best possible. We should enjoy the clothes we wear, and only buy if we really want them. We will consume less, buy better quality, and keep items for years not months. We will create an emotional, personal attachment to our clothing and cultivate our individual tastes. And because we will buy fewer clothes, we will spend more money on each purchase: we will pay for the environmental and ethical standards that should be the norm.

WHAT TO EXPECT

More than a festival, Collusion is a series of expected and unexpected events taking place in a beautiful canalside bar, which used to be a sausage factory. There will be fascinating chaos and comforting sounds. Bubbles and facepainting may or may not feature; likewise, knitting might happen (or, might not). Expect improvised words, improvised music, peculiar sounds, angular poetry, unmusical music, programmed sound and text, things going whoop, people shouting, groups of people singing, popping noises, some humming, and perhaps the occasional outburst of laughter or sighing. This is a free event, but we will be donating money to https://www.mindinhackney.org.uk/, and we will encourage our guests to make a donation on the day.

HOW IT WORKS

Collusion showcases written, spoken, plucked, hummed, beaten, blown, and programmed words and music. The event provides a space for the convergence of artists from a variety of forms, backgrounds, and traditions. It showcases edgy, innovative, experimental, and other forms, and is an entirely inclusive event. Collusion creates, foregrounds, and celebrates participation between artists and others. All colluders are welcome.

COLUMN 258 // EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC PROJECT // LIVE // FREE ENTRY

FREE ENTRY

Column258 return to Grow, Hackney after their first triumphant visit in November 2017. This 6-piece experimental music project that combines spoken word with improvised alt-punk grunge jazz. They blend both analogue and digital sounds with improvised instruments, found objects and samples; from horns to mini-moogs, guitars to electric pine cones.

They have variously been described as sounding like The Doors meets Nick Cavemeets Soft Machine, meets Gong—but ultimately their sound is truly their own, with a post-modernist feel and apocalyptic energy, soaring and carving its way into a hinterland of soundscapes ...

Whilst it may seem grandiose to lay claim to being label-free or unclassifiable, in the case of C258 it is actually true. This is music as a force for change, seeking escape from the tyranny of conformity and predictability.

MAI & AMPERSAND
Ebbs, Flows & Furies: An evening of Experimental Music and Dance

Mai Butoh Dance and Ampersand Industrial Noise will perform 2 sets of improvised Butoh/ Noise performance from 7pm.

ABOUT Mai Butoh Dance
Mai Nguyen Tri is a Franco Vietnamese dance artist. For the last 20 years she has drawn inspiration from the waters, back and fro between Brittany coasts, salt marshes and the river, pools and canals of the East End of London. Mixing her Butoh dancing spirit with her passion for improvising with live music, she loves to express her intense movements and bring light to a space with explosiveness. Her creative nest is Hackney Wick where her soul could finally set home to bring together her many identities, her inspirations, the contradicting facets of her art between the rebellious and the polished of her Euro-Asian Zen/punk Butoh dance. Mai collaborated with musicians, film -makers and photographers and specialise in site specific and specialise in outdoor performances with live improvisation bands, such as fear Of Fluffing from Hackney Wick and Ampersand from Deptford.

ABOUT AMPERSAND
London based improvisers of industrial ambient noise, Ampersand are an improvisational sound ensemble. They have performed across Europe over the last nine years. They produce an experience of sound to envelop the audience in the act of the moment and the art of the moment. This uniquely pan-generational group utilises found objects, engineered metal, deconstructed traditional instruments and audio toys. Ampersand performances are always improvised, they arise thus from the moment, the place, the atmosphere, the occurrences of that day. The sound, and the experience of that sound are imposed on all the senses, to share with the audience a charged and super-layered emotional state. Ampersand are Brian Bushell, Joseph Oldfield, Stephen Oldfield and Paul Wells. http://www.ampersand.tv/

Mai & Ampersand have performed together in numerous performing venues in the last 3 years. Crystal Palace Overground Festival in 2015- Lewisham Art House In 2016.- Grow, Hackney Wick, in 2016.- Minesweeper ship, Deptford Creek in 2015, 2016.- Azart, Ship Of Fools, Amsterdam in 2016 - Montague Arms, New Cross in 2017 - Stour Space, Hackney Wick in 2017

ABOUT ZEYN MROUEH

Zeyn Mroueh is a Cypriot-born, Lebanese-Palestinian musician creating industrial soundscapes and experimental noise music.

He composes primarily on the guitar using an array of effects and samples to distort and manipulate traditional music in atonal sound experiences. With creative roots in psychedelic and stoner rock, he references melodic music within the frameworks of his pieces in minimal spells, creating an effect on the listener that reflects his views on the lived experiences of those existing in postmodern society - long bouts of discomfort, confusion, entrancement, struggle that are relieved by few and fragile moments of beauty, love and release."

The Grow Village Fete hopes to create a spectacle within a Spectacle , which frees us, even for a moment. This Village Fete will focus on collaboration. Through interactions, sociality and play we will attempt to disentangle ourselves from our everyday lives. Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi says if we can disentangle we may imagine other possible futures, already in our present, but which we have yet to uncover

Expect manifestations of ‘splat the rat’, ‘human fruit machine’, ‘sponge stock’,‘hoopla’, a raffle, cakes and plants stalls, live performances from brass band, Das Brass, Mixed Bag Of Nuts DJs and a Slow Fire London BBQ. The event also raises funds for local mental health charity, Core Arts.

The artist behind the fete is co-founder of Grow, Jordanna Greaves. Her work is a humorous protest at what it is to comply to the power systems around us and asks ‘can we play to become something new?’ She often works in collaboration, and this Village Fete, as do all the events at Grow, relies on the sharing economy of artists and musicians of the surrounding area, and everyone who walks through its doors. She is currently studying MA Fine Art at John Cass with tutor Bobandroberta Smith.

FREE ENTRY

Join us for Grow Your Own in Hackney Wick, where we join forces with local artists to celebrate creativity and on Thursday 20 April, we welcome the FLOATING ARTLAND collective to immerse us with Interactive Photography, Story Telling and Memories' Project 'Randomness of Life':

Life is full of surprises, adventures and random events. Sometimes we just go with the flow. Sometimes we are fighting to be somewhere, but destiny deciding to put us in different places and circumstances. Sometimes we wake up surprised about what’s going on around. There are lots of random events and happenings. The most important thing is to notice it and enjoy it – those curious accidents.

In this project we want to talk exactly about these memories, recorded with a photo camera. It lets to look at events in a different view, gives a smile and inspires to be humorous, look for more adventurous and crazy randomness.

We want to inspire as much people as possible to join this project by sending your own random photos. It does not need to be professionally taken. All you need to do is to remember your very craziest day, find a photo and send it to teresa@floatingartland.com with a short story, telling what's happened at that very moment. We know you have many of those ;)

On the day photography and short videos will be projected on the wall with occasional short performances, recreating those random moments.

Expect DJ spinning tunes and good night of wonder and laugh.

FLOATING ARTLAND collective is always trying to organize interactive events. They believe that in this way communication will be developed within different people, participants and spectators, the boundaries will be tackled and gone. Everybody is an artist and in this project we will prove it again. More at www.floatingartland.com

Let's figure it out. Join for a night of poetry, comedy, and performance.

Their 2015/16 show Stories of a Queer Brown Muddy Kid toured across the UK, selling out venues including the RVT & Housman's Bookstore. As well as being one of the 2016/17 Artist in Residences at the Tate, in the last year their work has been featured in Artsy, Manon, Wildabout - as well as performing in venues both locally and internationally.
